They do sit on a gentle range of weight, and I've been plain about it. Hilo and Zita are the brightest and funniest, easy landing spots for a younger or more sensitive reader. Bone is a laugh-out-loud epic with creepy-but-comic monsters. 5 Worlds and Cleopatra in Space bring bigger action in a bright, adventurous key. The Nameless City is the most grown-up, a layered story of a conquered city with real knife-and-sword fighting and a death near the end, so it's the one to hold for a child ready for something weightier.
