Hacked is the surest first hand-over and the safest: a fast cyber-crime thriller with nothing to brace for and the widest age, the right pick if your child is younger or you want a story without violence in it. Foul Play is nearly as easy and the one for a sports fan, a football mystery that moves at the pace of a match. Overdrive is a street race and a crash and the guilt of running from it. Tin Boy is the harder edge, a child doing deadly work in a collapsing mine. Grave Matter is the outlier and the heaviest: real horror, a death, deep grief, and frightening occult imagery, for the oldest and sturdiest reader only. Read each book's own note; the reading is easy, the subjects are not all easy.
