Two best friends stop speaking after each calls the other's lunch gross, and it takes a taste of the other's sandwich to put it right.
Lily always brings a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to lunch. Her best friend Salma always brings hummus on pita. Each one privately thinks the other's lunch looks gross, and one day one of them says it out loud. The insult grows, other children pick sides, and it builds into a full cafeteria food fight. What finally settles it is small: the two girls actually taste each other's sandwich.
It hands a young child the exact shape of a spat they already know: one small unkind comment, and then it snowballs until a best friend feels like a stranger across the room. The quarrel happens to be about lunch — one girl's family eats peanut butter and jelly, the other's eats hummus — so it opens a natural door to talking about difference without ever tipping into a lesson. The food fight is genuinely funny to look at, too, which keeps things light even while the friendship is on the line.
