Poppy is the most timid mouse in her family, and she's the one who ends up crossing the whole forest to face the owl who has ruled them by fear and by a lie.
In Dimwood Forest, the mice live by one rule: never go anywhere without asking Mr. Ocax, the great horned owl. He says he keeps them safe from the porcupines, and they believe him. One night Poppy and her fiancé Ragweed slip out to celebrate without permission, and Ocax swoops down and eats Ragweed while Poppy watches. Later, when her big, hungry family needs to move to a new home, Ocax won't allow it, so Poppy heads out alone across the forest to find out the truth about him. She meets Ereth, a huge and spectacularly grumpy porcupine, and little by little the most fearful mouse in the family becomes the one willing to face the owl herself.
This is a full hero's journey shrunk to mouse size: a tyrant, a lie, a long solo quest, a final showdown. The writing is a real step up from most talking-animal books, with richer sentences and a bigger vocabulary, and Avi doesn't cushion the danger. Reading it aloud, your child gets to meet a genuinely scary owl and a real loss with you sitting right there. If they've loved gentler animal stories and are ready for one with actual stakes, this is a good next one.
