A girl helps her grandad fix up the old camper van he once traveled the world in with the husband he misses.
Milly loves visiting Grandad by the sea and hearing about the adventures he and Gramps had in their bright pink camper van, off across mountains and coastlines together. But Gramps has died, and Grandad doesn't feel like going anywhere on his own anymore, so the van sits in the garage gathering dust. Milly has an idea: fix it up together. They give it a new stripe, change a tire, and get it ready to make new memories, the way Grandad used to.
It holds two things at once, missing someone and looking forward, without making either one heavy, which is exactly what a young child can manage. The love story between Grandad and Gramps is simply part of the family's history, told in warm pictures and photo albums. And the camper gives your child something to do with the sad feeling: not fix it, just help Grandad get rolling again.
