Her family doesn't quite share the obsession, but they cheer her on all the same. And it turns out Mabel isn't the only one out there with a soft spot for sanitation trucks.
It takes the very specific, all-consuming love a small child gets for one particular thing and treats it as completely wonderful. Mabel isn't a phase to grow out of; she's the hero. The pages are clean and bright and the pleasure is pure recognition, which is why it lands so well for the child who has their own Mabel-sized obsession. It's a Caldecott Honor book, so the art earns a slow look too.
