Firedrake is a young silver dragon whose home valley is about to be flooded by humans, so he sets off to find a legendary safe haven called the Rim of Heaven, high in the Himalayas. He travels with Sorrel, a mushroom-obsessed brownie who is all prickly loyalty, and Ben, an orphaned boy with nowhere else to be. What none of them know is that they're being hunted by Nettlebrand, a monstrous golden dragon built long ago for one purpose: killing every real dragon left. It's a big, warm, around-the-world quest with a creepy villain on their trail.
This is the next dragon epic for a child who loved the bond between people and dragons in Wings of Fire and wants that same big-quest feeling. Cornelia Funke builds a whole world of fantastical creatures, a djinn with a thousand eyes, a sea serpent, a helpful little homunculus, and strings them along a journey that never stops moving. It's long, which is the point: a child ready to sink into a fat book gets weeks of bedtimes out of it. And Firedrake is a hero to love, brave and gentle at the same time.
