Chi's Sweet Home, Vol. 1

By Konami Kanata

A lost kitten talks her way into a family that isn't allowed to keep pets, and it is the softest book on this shelf.

A gray-and-white kitten wanders away from her mother on a walk and can't find her way back. A little boy named Yohei carries her home. The trouble is that the Yamadas' apartment building bans pets, so the whole family starts smuggling one very loud kitten in and out under a coat. Chi narrates the entire thing herself, in baby talk, with total confidence and no idea what's going on.

This is the one manga on the shelf with no learning curve at all. It's printed in full color and it reads left to right, like any English book, so a child who has never touched manga can just open it and go. The chapters run a few pages each, which means your child can put it down anywhere and never lose the thread.
