Calvin is a boy with the biggest imagination in comics, and Hobbes is his tiger — a plush toy to everyone else, a living best friend to Calvin. One panel they're in the backyard, the next Calvin is a dinosaur, a space hero, or a snowman-building mad scientist. The daily strips are quick and funny; the Sunday ones are little bursts of pure imagination.
The art does so much of the storytelling that a reluctant reader gets swept along by the pictures, then finds themselves reading the words to catch the joke. The vocabulary is rich, so it rewards a strong reader too, and there is no plot to keep track of — every strip is its own small adventure.
